North American Bison

As a child, I liked to collect buffalo nickels. In the ’50s you could still get them in change. My interest and fascination with these unique wild animals never went away.

Today, they are the primary subject matter of my wildlife paintings. In addition to observing and photographing these magnificent animals, I complement my picture-making with reading and research on the impact bison have had on the ecology of the Great Plains.

More than just an icon of West and our new national mammal, the presence of buffalo on the land is of vital importance to the health of the flora, fauna and native peoples that call the grasslands and rolling prairies of North America their home.

My goal is to develop a series of large-format informational paintings that would visually communicate this important information. As a traveling exhibition, my hope is the work would help garner support for programs that positively impact the survival of free-roaming buffalo herds and eventual restoration of the ecosystem of the Great Plains of North America.
