Celebrating the American Bison

Posted by on May 3, 2015

Western landscapes have always had a unique appeal for me—in art and in real life. When I have the opportunity to travel in the western United States and Canada, I like spending time in the national parks and wilderness areas.

Wanting to participate in the western-themed national juried shows, I decided to concentrate my initial efforts on depicting the seasonal life of the American Bison. My monochrome format and overall painting technique turned out to be a good fit for the subject matter. In addition to bison, I’ve started to include other native animals and birds in the subject matter for my paintings of these rugged landscapes.

The first three paintings in the series shown below, In the WillowsDeep Snow and Near the Pines, were recently accepted in the 2015 Icons of the West national juried show at the Dana Gallery in Missoula, Montana.

The exhibition will be at the Dana Gallery from May 15 through August 30, 2015.  www.DanaGallery.com
